"Philosophy is like a product and culture is like the packaging. Without proper packaging the product will not be protected. Nor will it even look attractive.”

The Annual Drama Festival is held sometime in November. All Drama enthusiasts of the Radhagopinath community, whether Industrialists or farmers, whether software professionals or bank employees, whether male or female, whether young or old, all team up to present a loving offering of dramas for the rest of the community. It is perhaps the only one of its kind to be conducted on a non-commercial non-profit basis with the price of the tickets covering only the rent of the auditorium.
The Drama festivals started in 1994. The venue was Birla Krida Kendra(a theatre in Mumbai, India). Thirteen skits, each of five minutes duration were enacted with simple costumes. The next year dramas of thirty minutes duration with more elaborate costumes were enacted. Now, every year a total of four dramas of two hours duration are enacted, two on each day. Over the years, the Drama Festival has grown in terms of better costumes, better scripts, better performance standards, better lights and better sound system. On an individual level, each participant has grown in his confidence and acting abilities. “Radhanath Swami has the ability to induce people and projects to grow organically,” says a member of the congregation in this regard.
Participants start preparing for the plays four months in advance with the first month spent only in script writing and the next three months spent in practicing, all for that single show which will never have a replay. Each drama is a labor of love, dedication and tremendous sacrifice in terms of money and time. Each member invests his energy wholeheartedly to inspire the audience who come from far and near to watch the performance. “It is much inconvenience, practicing for hours after spending a whole day at the office working hard. But the thought that our efforts will uplift others, mentally and spiritually, motivates us to work harder,” says Vishaka Priya who has been a part of the organizing team of the festival since its very inception. “We actually experience the joy of selfless service. This is the joy, which every drama performer is meant to experience,” And there is one more factor of inspiration. Another organizer and actor, Dr, Dhalal, husband of Vishaka Priya, reveals it. “After every drama festival, I start counting days for my performance in the next. I look forward for that encouraging smile of Radhanath Swami, which is my remuneration for my months of practice. Whatever be the level of performance, Radhanath Swami encourages us by honest heartfelt appreciation. Thus we are inspired to put in more efforts. Radhanath Swami never compares, “This troop’s performance was better than the others.” At the end of the festival every group feels happy that they tried their best, and their sincere efforts were appreciated by Radhanath Swami. Seeing him we get an understanding of how an ideal leader should be.”
Like with dramas of traditional Indian culture, dramas at the Drama Festival are enactments of stories from books of ancient wisdom. They provide both entertainment and help people develop deep character. Radhanath Swami makes sure that the script writers do not deviate from the original content of the scriptural stories. Simultaneously he encourages creativity in performance for better entertainment of the audience. “Children like dramas and they consider them real. So when they see personalities with good character being enacted on stage, they get inspired to emulate them in their own lives. Also, dramas help to create visual impressions, which aid in better learning of spiritual principles. We have actually seen this happening,” says Vishaka Priya. “So to nurture good citizens in society, children should be exposed to dramas and films, which not only provide entertainment but also promote good character.”
The performers themselves are amongst those benefitted the most. It’s a real spiritual experience for them. “It is an intense experience to practice a scriptural story for months together. It is total absorption and meditation on spiritual concepts, for almost three months—we get many realizations through the process. We actually experience spirituality,” says Vishaka Priya.
